Mycobacterium tuberculosis the causative agent of tuberculosis has emerged as the single most devastating global pathogen. With nearly eight million new cases of active disease and three million deaths on its account every year, TB has displaced malaria to claim the dubious distinction of becoming the topmost killer infection of the world today. In India alone TB accounts for nearly half a million deaths from nearly two million new cases each year. There is therefore an urgent need for developing new vaccines and drugs to stem the spread of TB.- Nutritional and Biochemical Profiles in Children Afflicted with Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Umbilical Cord Blood (UCB) was considered to be one of the least significant products of birth. But research has shown that the advantages of using UCB are many. It can be stored indefinitely, and therefore, can be transplanted back to its owner, removing the need to find a matched donor. It can also be donated to an unrelated recipient because of its reduced immune reactivity.- Book Review

Cereals and millets occupy an important place in the grain economy. The millet tenai Setaria Italica (Italian millet) is used as an important food source by the poorer class of people in India. This is known to promote a very low growth rate in rats as their proteins are found to be deficient in certain essential amino acids. So in this study an effort was made to improve the nutritional quality of tenai by germination. The study was also extended to find out the nutrient loss on cooking.- Changes in Serum Enzymes and Lipids in Mycocardial Infarction

Cancer is increasingly threatening to be one of the major health problems. The degree of malignancy of a cancer is based upon the capacity of the cancer cells to metastasize. A metastasis is a neoplastic lesion arising from another cancer, with which it is no longer in contiguity. By determining the presence of early metastatic disease, treatment can often be designed, which can increase the chance for cure or delay the development of symptoms even if cure is not achievable.- Magnesium in Clinical Practice

Cancer is increasingly recognised as an important public health problem worldwide. Of the 5.9 million cases each year globally, three million come from developing countries. Circumstantial evidence in man suggests that immunity is important in host resistance aganist antigenic malignant disease and that any breakdown of the normal mechanism facilitates the development of malignant tumors.- A Study on the Activity of Selected Enzymes in the Ripenings of Banana and Guava

Banana (Musa Paradisica) and Guava (Psidium guajava, L.) are tropical fruits cultivated prominently in the plain areas of the country. Fruit ripening clearly involves the induction of variety of enzymatically catalysed metabolic reactions. Ripening fruits soften because pectin and other cell wall carbohydrates are broken down enzymatically. Therefore this investigation was undertaken to find out the activities of selected enzymes namely amylase, invertase, pectin esterse, polygalacuronase, acid phosphatase and polyphenol oxidase in the ripening of Banana and guava.- Dietary Supplementation and Vitamin A Nutrition of Rural Children

The greatest single cause of disability in the developing world, where 80 per cent of the disabled live, is malnutrition. Most vulnerable of all are the infants and children, whose well being and intellectual growth determine the future of the nation. Vitamin A deficiency, the blinding malnutrition or xerophthalmia, is the world's leading cause of blindness. In Asia, where the disorder is most common, more than five million children are affected by xerophthalmia every year, and at least 5,00,000 of them become blinds.- 'Caffeine' Perspectives from Recent Research
